Prog Metal New Releases: 09/25/13

Continuing with this amazing month of progressive metal, the big new release this week is of course the new self-titled album by the biggest band in the genre, Dream Theater.  However, it’s so encouraging that, as big as the DT boys are, we’ve got some seriously great melodic metal from the U.S.’ Oceanborn, Finland’s Sisare and Norway’s Vicinity.  All of these bands do owe a debt to DT for paving the way but these bands all have their unique, modern spin on melodic prog.  If you’re looking for something a bit heavier, we’ve got a lot of that end of the spectrum with the progressive thrash of the U.K.’s Hyrbris, the progressive post-metal from Russia’s Paskura and the modern “djent” inspired sounds of two new U.S. bands, Of Empires and Polyphia.  Finally, we were recently contacted by three seriously nutty New Yorkers, Cotillion and their wild take on modern, technical instrumental metal on their debut album Debutantes.  Yeah, we all know that this is Dream Theater‘s week to shine (and rightfully so given the continuing excellence of their music and their legendary status) but let’s all give these newer bands a listen and maybe we’ll find we just discovered the next superstars!

As usual, we’ve got soundclips/full streaming along with Spotify links if available so you can check out all of the albums for this week and please do let us know which ones you like best!

(Note to bands and fans: please let us know if any albums are missing from this week’s new release schedule and we’ll gladly include them. No demos please but we will include E.P.’s if they’re available for purchase. If you do decide to purchase any of this week’s albums please do so via the links below as that does help to fund this webzine.)

CotillionDebutantesUnited StatesProgressive Instrumental Djent Metal (This ain't your momma's debutante ball, that's for sure. Three wacked-out New Yorkers doin' their crazy form of instrumental metal. Great punchy recording and some seriously inventive experimental stuff these guys are doin'. Definitely for fans of Scale The Summit and available for FREE from the band's BandCamp site.)
Dream TheaterDream TheaterUnited StatesProgressive Metal (the new album by the biggest progressive metal band in the world doesn't disappoint. Filled with signature Dream Theater super-fast technicality, powerful rock anthem ballads and is capped by the amazing and powerful 20-minute epic Illumination Theory.)(Download)

HybrisHeavy MachineryUnited KingdomProgressive Technical Thrash Metal (we really like this band that has an aggressive thrash approach but also adds in a lot of highly technical elements to keep it exciting and fresh. Bessed described to us as a cross betweeen early Metallica and Voivod is a good description.)
OceanbornHidden From The WorldUnited StatesProgressive Metal (powerful and exciting debut by this new Chicago band that effortlessly combines the theatrical melodicism of Dream Theater with a modern prog approach of Coheed and Cambria. Epic prog metal just doesn't get any better than this!)

Of EmpiresDisintegrationUnited StatesProgressvie Djent Metal (new heavy prog band that adds some cool electronic textures and great grooves to their modern "djent" sound. Definitely for fans of Periphery.)
PaskuraSpikaRussiaProgressive Post-Metal (new Russian band working in one of the most exciting developments in modern prog metal. A very intelligent and powerful progressive approach combined with the raw energy of post-metal. These great and very well-crafted songs will stay with you long after you hear them. If there are more bands like this in Russia, bring on the invasion!)Spotify Link
PolyphiaInspireUnited StatesProgressive Instrumental Djent Metal (yet another great band mining the newer "djent" form of heavy, rhythmically challenging modern metal. These guys manage the amazing feat of pulling off some insane technicality while keeping their music emotionally powerful and rather haunting, especially in the great use of starkly recorded piano. Apparently the band is now looking for a vocalist but we're not sure that's really needed for music as powerful as this band's.)Spotify Link
SisareNature's DespairFinlandProgressive Rock/Metal (wonderfully melancholy and deep soundscapes from this excellent Finnish band that adds elements of jazz, folk and post-metal to their progressive style. There's a really powerful, contemplative and intense feel to this band's music that reminds me of some of the heavier elements of Porcupine Tree. If that's at all your cup of tea, these guys will hit you hard - I guarantee it! Download for FREE from the band's website here.)
VicinityAwakeningNorwayProgressive Metal (exciting and energetic young Norwegian band. Very melodic and emotional music in the vein of Circus Maximus and Threshold. Great band that should only get better as they mature.)(Download)
