Prog Metal New Releases: 03/18/14

Must be a lot of darkness still in the air as we move into Spring cause this week’s got mostly some pretty heavy shit in the progressive metal world including Belgium’s Omnerod, France’s Spasmophiliaque, Dutch band Shylmagoghnar, Swedish technical sludge band Tellusion, the U.K.’s amazing Ageless Oblivion and two U.S. bands, Decipher the Fallen and Mr. one album per month Wilder Falotico.  Not much in the way of melodic prog but we do have the progressive power metal of the U.K.’s Winter’s Edge, France’s Gaiden and one of our favorite releases of the year, the modern progressive sounds from Menace, fronted by Napalm Death’s Mitch Harris.  As usual we’ve got soundclips/full streaming for all of these albums as well as Spotify links if available for you to check out.

(Note to bands and fans: please let us know if any albums are missing from this week’s new release schedule and we’ll gladly include them. No demos please but we will include E.P.’s if they’re available for purchase. If you do decide to purchase any of this week’s albums please do so via the links below as that does help to fund this webzine.)

Ageless OblivionPenthos

United KingdomProgressive Technical Death Metal (second album by one of the best tech death bands going. Crushingly brutal at times but also a great dose of dark ambience. A sickly talented band that could break out huge with the release of this beast of an album!)

Decipher The FallenAmbivelance

United StatesProgressive Metalcore (Somehow we missed this album from last year but this Vacaville band just kills it on their latest album. Intricate, tight and wildly inventive tech death/metalcore. Killer grooves too make this album a keeper. Available for FREE from the band's BandCamp site!)
GaidenJoker Business II

FranceProgressive Metal (new EP from this cool French band that has a great melodic approach to their heavy take on modern progressive rock/metal. Definitely get a bit of a Tool vibe from these guys at times.)
MenaceImpact Velocity

InternationalProgressive Hard Rock/Metal (very unexpected and seriously amazing album led by Mitch Harris (Napalm Death, Meathook Seed). Per Harris, "Menace explores dissonance, melody, relating the width and breadth of human emotion and experience. This delicious musical cocktail contains many tasty ingredients ranging from the mystery and emotionality of TOOL to eccentric VOIVOD and even delivering thrashy riffs." We couldn't agree more and this great debut is easily one of our favorites of the year so far.)

OmnerodIvory Dune

BelgiumProgressive Death Metal (very cool and diverse band that has a complex progressive approach with crazy rhythms, inventive melodies and even a touch of manic fun. Honestly this one's a mind-blower and keeps getting better the more we listen to it. Another fantastic debut for 2014. Criminally available for FREE (!) from the band's BandCamp site.)

NetherlandsProgressive Atmospheric Black Metal (two man band that has a dark, almost Gothic at times approach to their progressive black metal style. The keyboards here really make this album stand out. A very unique take on
progressive black metal.)

SpasmophiliaqueFirst Step on the Wild Side

FranceProgressive Technical Death Metal (crazy tech death from this French one-man project.)

SwedenProgressive Technical Sludge Metal (High energy tech death with a strong dose of heavy sludge. Definitely for fans of Mastodon.)

Wilder FaloticoThe Demons I Sought

United StatesProgressive Atmospheric Death Metal (new, very short EP from Mr. Falotico who has promised one album a month for all of 2014! We haven't heard the others that he's done but this is an excellent mixture of dark and brooding metal with atmospherics, ambient keyboards and some female vocals.)
Winter's EdgeThe Ferryman's Eyes

United KingdomProgressive Melodic Power Metal (Power metal solo project from UK musician Jeremy Lawler and a huge cast of guest musicians. Unfortunately this album has a very poor production quality.)

  1. Hey PMZ, thanks for another awesome weekly roundup! (Check the Winter’s Edge album cover…my scroll shows Wilder Falotico’s “The Demons I Sought” where “They Ferryman’s Eyes” should be).
